After a year of effort the Real Pork Trust Consortium (RPTC) was asked to share evolving consumer perceptions and concerns related to the pork industry at the World Pork Expo. Dr. Alexa Lamm, alongside Dr. Nick Gabler, Dr. Pedro Uriolla, and Dr. Catherine Sanders from the RPTC shared their insights on communicating, training and research. Dr. Lamm shared “We have to start by understanding where consumers are at. We have conducted listening sessions with consumers on both coasts, and the preliminary data we’ve gotten back is that they’re focused on food safety and the health aspects of pork. They also care about animal welfare and sustainability.

The consortium has been identifying influencers to work with to share science related to pork’s nutritional value and ease of cooking, as well as conducting surveys to provide insight into the messaging that should be used. Dr. Lamm reminded those in the audience “The most personal choice we make is what we consume and put in our bodies, so every consumer feels connected to the ag industry.” The Iowa Farmer Today provided an overview of the panel session, delivered to over 150 producers, consumers and members of the media.
