The Lamm Lab participated in the 2026 American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas. Michael Batame and Dennis Baffour-Awuah represented the lab throughout the weeklong conference, participating in conference activities and presenting research from the Soilless Substrate Science project.
The Soilless Substrate Science project brings together researchers from multiple institutions to explore sustainable alternatives to peat-based growing substrates and to support their adoption in the U.S. specialty crop industry. As part of the project, the Lamm Lab leads the social science component, working to better understand growers’ perceptions, experiences, and decision-making about the use of peat-alternative substrates.
At ASHS, Batame and Baffour-Awuah presented their research titled Understanding U.S. Specialty Crop Growers’ Adoption of Sustainable Soilless Substrates: A Diffusion of Innovations Perspective. The study looked at the factors influencing growers’ adoption of peat-alternative substrates through the lens of the Diffusion of Innovations theory. The findings showed that growers’ adoption decisions extend beyond sustainability. Relative advantage emerged as the strongest facilitator of adoption, particularly when alternative substrates offered advantages in crop quality, economic viability, and sustainability. Compatibility with existing production systems also supported adoption, while complexity was the greatest barrier because transitioning to alternative substrates may require changes to irrigation, equipment, and other production practices. Opportunities to conduct small-scale trials and observe successful adoption by other growers helped reduce uncertainty and build confidence in alternative substrates.

Beyond presenting their research, Michael and Dennis used the conference as an opportunity to engage with graduate students and horticulture industry professionals in conversations recorded for the AgriCurious podcast. They discussed graduate school experiences, how to make the most of professional conferences, and how to navigate the transition from graduate school to industry careers. These conversations will be featured in upcoming episodes.
