Kasi Romo’s Summer 2022 Experience
Throughout the time that I have spent with the Healthier Together team this summer, not only have I gained endless amounts of knowledge in the communications field, but I have also had the pleasure of getting to know my fellow team members and grow more connected to the five communities in which Healthier Together actively participates.
My responsibilities as the Undergraduate Communications Research Assistant focused mainly with social media content creation and management, which is a realm of communications that I was not as experienced or familiar with prior to the beginning of my position with Healthier Together. However, as weeks turned to months, and with continuous guidance and support from the communications team and other staff members, I can say—with confidence—that I will be exiting this position with newfound skills and knowledge that will help propel my professional career forward in the coming years.
If I had to choose one project of mine that was my favorite to work on, I would choose all of the work I did on Healthier Together’s website. Prior to this position, I had never utilized WordPress, and had only heard that it was difficult to navigate and therefore very hard to use. So obviously, I was intimidated to be responsible for using WordPress to help bring the website to a new chapter.
After many many YouTube tutorial videos, and a bit of trial and error, I was able to gather a basic knowledge of the website-building platform and how to use it! As time passed and I grew more comfortable with using WordPress, I was then able to help take the program’s website to that next level! My work is definitely not professional-tier, but for a first-timer, I think I earned that gold star. Below you’ll find a few things I have worked on that I take the most pride in:
As a remote worker, I was, unfortunately, never able to physically visit any of the counties that Healthier Together is involved with. But from what I was unable to witness in-person, I was able to witness through photos! From there, I could then create media surrounding the work done throughout these communities to ensure that everyone who viewed the media could still hold that connection with these communities as well.
I am so incredibly grateful for the time I spent with the Healthier Together program and team, the many communities I had the pleasure to be a part of, and the priceless skills I gained throughout my time with the program. But, even more so, I am thankful for the endless amounts of support I received from the Healthier Together team as I moved through my position. Thank you all for your never-ending kindness and guidance throughout the summer and thank you for allowing me to be a member of such an amazing organization!
