Dr. Alexa Lamm and Kristin Gibson coauthored a manuscript with Dr. Laura Warner, an associate professor at the University of Florida, about normative influences on landscape irrigation in Florida. The article, published in Society & Natural Resources, examined behavior change interventions for residential landscape irrigation based on generalized, expectancy-based, and value-expectancy injunctive and descriptive norms.

One major finding was generalized norms, which include people who are important in someone’s life, are the most important predictor of eliminating irrigated landscape area. Generalized norms can be difficult to target, however, considering how specific they are to each person’s life. The study emphasized using the expectancy-based model instead since it can be applied more broadly to communication messages.
