Allow me to share with you a funny but potentially life threatening story about a girl named Jodie and a pigeon. Once we had landed in Montevideo, we were led to our hotel on a bus and checked in to our hotel rooms. Immediately after, we met in the lobby and proceeded to walk to…

Do you remember those two years of foreign language we all took in high school? Neither did I when I first got to Uruguay, but slowly my two years of Spanish came back to me. I was by no means proficient but I could order my meals and that was important, even so that I…

  • A week of fighting food insecurity in Dumfries, Scotland, United Kingdom

    Hugo Moran

    March 15, 2016

I had the most memorable experience ever. Scotland will change my life forever. During the week of service learning, I had the opportunity to meet people from all over Dumfries and discuss food insecurity issues. People are doing a great job in fighting these issues and it was great to put a little bit…

    March 15, 2016

We arrived in Dumfries two days ago and today is our first day of fighting food insecurity. It’s an incredible experience how great this country is. We are putting together the last details to conduct interviews with the people involved in fighting food insecurity issues here. I am falling in love with Scotland; excellent food,…

The last few days in Uruguay have been both enlightening and fun. Every farm we have been to has been so interesting. They are much like ours and yet different. The dairy systems are based mostly on pastures and they are less intensive than our systems at home. This is noted in their production levels,…

Today we visited the Julia Ortiz Farm. What an incredible experience it was seeing this well-diversified agriculture operation up close and personal. The Ortiz family obviously made the serious effort to ensure we had a great time while learning about their operation. Without a doubt, the Ortiz family was successful in providing us an enjoyable…

For those curious about the food: We were always fed well! A typical meal always has a big piece of meat and bread (like 50 types of bread!), but don’t expect all the sauces and garnishes we use in the US because Uruguay keeps it simple. The Uruguayan way is to enjoy dinner together, so expect…

    March 14, 2016

We made the most of each day while in Uruguay. We saw many sun rises and almost every sunset, and each time I questioned whether I had seen anything more beautiful. Each day was an adventure to its own, ranging from walking through pastures, listening to a local a farmer, touring a meat packing plant…

I’m a little late on the “During Trip” blog post but here goes nothing! Monday was a very busy day with farm tours, research station visits and to end the day dinner at the Central Kiyu Bull Test Station. One of my favorite parts was visiting the Veiga Family dairy. The Veiga Dairy was started…
