One of my biggest excitements before embarking on this food production, study abroad across Spain, was getting to taste this Mediterranean diet I’ve heard so much about. I thought that I would be grubbing on something new every day but I was surprisingly disappointed. First of all, my host mom was vegan. Nudia was a vegan who eats eggs… please someone explain to me how that works? My roommates and I did not know that our host mom was vegan until our arrival so I was not prepared for the next two weeks. I don’t know about you all but I eat meat with every meal. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner include meat as the main part. I went from eating meat three times a day to not at all. By the third night of eating like a rabbit, my roomies and I were craving meat. We didn’t care whether it was chicken or beef we just needed something more. We made a group decision (which did not take much convincing) to skip out on dinner with Nudia and go out to eat at a restaurant in the city. We told Nudia deuces and rolled out to find a restaurant with good meat choices. We craved it so much we literally ordered an entire meat platter for the three of us. That was one of the best dinners we had on this trip and we did not eat a single vegetable or starch. It was great. Besides meals at home with Nudia, the food at restaurants and the places we visited lived up to the rumors I heard about the Mediterranean diet. I was slightly disappointed at the flavor of the dishes that I tried while I was there. Coming into this I thought the food and meat would have a more spicy, louder flavor but it was bland to me. I felt they could have done more with seasoning and spices.
