My viticulture/enology class began our first full day in Cortona. The lectures in the class were all interesting and, for the most part, easy to follow. The bulk of the first week focused on the plants themselves and the diseases they faced. As a pathology major, this section interested me the most. However, after the first week the focus shifted to the different agricultural and enological practices per region of the world. I enjoyed learning about this too because one of my goals on this trip was to better understand agricultural practices around the world (or at least somewhere other than Georgia, USA). On our field trips to wineries and vineyards, everything that we learned in class came to life. I was surprised at how relevant the class was to the way wine is produced in Italy. Not only were the vineyards educational, they were also beautifully landscaped. All of Italy is filled with stunning views that take your breath away. I was loving this experience.
