Do you remember those two years of foreign language we all took in high school? Neither did I when I first got to Uruguay, but slowly my two years of Spanish came back to me. I was by no means proficient but I could order my meals and that was important, even so that I can say that I have gained some weight while on this trip. The dining culture of Uruguay is very different than that of those in the states. Breakfast is very light, with lunch being served between twelve and two pm, which was fine but the dinner is where we students have been having the most trouble. Uruguayans eat dinner at night between 10 pm and 1 am. This late dining has led to many “hangry” students, but this is the culture and we must embrace it. The best thing about this is that you essentially get a steak as a midnight snack and dinner all rolled into one. If any of you get a chance, try and use the Spanish you may have learned in high school to order at your local restaurant, I suggest ordering the Ojo de Bife , and remember EAT BEEF!
