NRCS Practical Skills Training Program for Intern and Early-Career Professional Workforce Development
The Practical Skills Training Program is a structured, field-centered learning experience designed for NRCS interns. It introduces foundational competencies such as field navigation, equipment handling, land and landowner etiquette, and safe, effective fieldwork procedures. Beyond technical knowledge, the project emphasizes leadership behaviors—communication, responsibility, initiative, and professional confidence. -This project enhances NRCS capacity by: • Integrating technical field skills, safety preparation, and situational judgment into one cohesive training block. • Accelerating onboarding by reducing the time it takes for new staff and interns to become fully field ready. • Strengthening NRCS’s pipeline of future conservation planners, soil conservationists, ecologists, and program specialists.
“My primary goal is to formalize, strengthen, and expand a field-based Practical Skills Training program that builds a confident, prepared, and safety aware early career workforce for NRCS. Secondary goal is to position the program is to “scale-up” outside of Georgia: for adoption in every state as a foundational leadership development tool.”
