This week’s featured plant is Cedrus deodara, commonly referred to as the deodar cedar or Himalayan cedar. These large evergreen conifers are in the pine family (Pinaceae) and can be found as specimen plantings in Georgia landscapes. Their central leading trunks in Georgia are commonly snapped by ice storms allowing lower shoots to vie for apical dominance and creating a candelabra like crown. A large deodar cedar can be seen in front of the Durham Farm residence on Hog Mountain road.
