Episode 1-1: Hay Cutting
In this first episode of the “A Cut Above the Rest” video series, we address several concepts relating to hay harvest and conditioning. We address the relationship between forage maturity and Relative Forage Quality (RFQ), determining the time to cut the forage, preparing and adjusting the cutting equipment for safe operation, optimal cutting heights, cutting speed, conditioner types, and tricks to maximizing drying speed. Episode 1-2: Raking and Tedding
The second episode of the “A Cut Above the Rest” video series presents greater detail about how the hay crop should be tedded and raked prior to baling. Using a tedder, especially in combination with a mower-conditioner, can greatly improve your dry down time and relative forage quality. How the tedder and rake are set up and operated can have a big impact on the bale one makes. In this episode, we focus on agronomic insights and best practices needed to replenish the nutrients lost throughout the season. Also, you can learn about the importance of timing your last cutting to prepare for winterization and a healthy spring crop.
