Name: Hosna Mohammadilalabadi
Role: Graduate Research Assistant (07/2024-present)
Introduction: Hosna is a PhD student in the Department of Poultry Science at the University of Georgia. Her research is centered on using machine learning and computer vision techniques to predict broiler gait scores. By analyzing chickens’ gait, She aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of poultry health assessments, which is essential for detecting mobility issues early and improving overall welfare. For her project, she works with video footage to track the movements of broiler chickens. She extracts important kinematic data, such as speed, distance, and direction, using advanced tracking models. This data is then used to predict gait scores, which provide insights into the health and behavior of the chickens. She also accounts for variations in camera setups and environmental factors like feeder, drinker, and pen dimensions to make sure the predictions are accurate in different conditions. A key part of her research is optimizing these machine learning models to make them more reliable and applicable across different poultry farming systems. Her goal is to create a tool that is adaptable to various environments, which will help farmers better manage flock health and contribute to the broader field of precision livestock farming. In addition to my research, she believes in the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing. She actively engages with her lab colleagues and the wider scientific community, contributing to discussions and supporting others in their research. She also takes pride in mentoring junior researchers, helping them grow and develop their skills as they navigate their own academic journeys.
