Several scientists who worked with the Peanut Innovation Lab’s precursor, the Peanut & Mycotoxin Innovation Lab, were recognized at the 2018 meeting of the American Peanut Research & Education Society for their contributions to the industry.

Barry Tillman of the University of Florida, who contributed to PMIL’s value chain improvement’s project in Haiti, took home the Award for Research given by Corteva Agriscience, the agriculture division of DowDuPont.

Peggy Ozias-Akins, the lead scientist on the PMIL Peanut Genomics project and a research professor at the University of Georgia won the Award for Education given by Corteva Agriscience.

Mark Burow of Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Texas Tech University won the Bailey Award for the paper Development of SNP-based Molecular Markers for a Peanut Breeding Program which he wrote with a dozen contributors.

The 50th Annual APRES meeting was held July 9-12 in Williamsburg, Virginia. More than 400 people were in attendance.

Craig K. Kvien of the University of Georgia won the Coyt T. Wilson Distinguished Service Award.

The student competition spanned three days at this year’s APRES meeting.

Winners of the Joe Sugg Graduate Student Competition were:

  • First Place, D.J. Mahoney, North Carolina State University, Presence and Distribution of Suspected Palmer Amaranth Resistant to PPO-Inhibiting Herbicides in the North Carolina Coastal Plain
  • Second Place, K.M. Eason, University of Georgia, Peanut and Weed Response to Postemergence Herbicide Tank-Mixtures Utilizing Paraquat
  • Third Place, S. Lamon, University of Georgia, Genotypic and Phenotypic Characterization of Peanut Lines with Interspecific Introgressions Conferring Late Leaf Spot Resistance

Winners of the Graduate Student Poster Competition included:

  • First Place, C.C. Weaver, University of Georgia, The Effect of Storage on Peanut Seed Quality
  • Second Place, J.M. Haynes, Clemson University, Augmentation of In-furrow Insecticides with Super-absorbent Polymer to Combat Spotted Wilt of Peanut
