The MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics is looking for a professional to join its team conducting research on food security supply chains and market systems in low- and middle-income countries. The position is based in Uganda with several weeks working on the MIT campus in Massachusetts each year.

The position is based in the Humanitarian Response Lab within CTL, which works with government, nongovernment, and private sector organizations to improve supply chains in developing countries. The successful candidate will develop and implement field research on the Market Systems Monitoring project, a USAID-funded study of agricultural supply chains in Uganda. CTL collaborates with USAID/Uganda Feed the Future Value Chain project partners to develop new approaches that assess the systemic impact of market facilitation activities. This a great opportunity to invent and implement new approaches for international development in a research-oriented environment.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Technical leadership of field research and supervision of field teams, including students based part-time in Uganda
  • Collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including serving as the Uganda-based liaison with local partners
  • Research design, methodological development and implementation, data collection, and analysis
  • Report writing and research publication in collaboration with the MSM team

General responsibilities:

  • Publishing results in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings
  • Delivering reports to sponsors
  • Actively engaging thought leaders, policymakers, managers, and others to move ideas to action
  • Leveraging research to develop new educational materials and curricula
  • Delivering educational programs
  • Other duties as needed

 Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or a master’s degree and three years of relevant experience in agricultural economics, development economics, international development, monitoring and evaluation, public policy, program/project management, operations management, supply chain management, transportation, or related field
  • Knowledge of empirical and economic research methods
  • Ability to conduct statistical/econometric analysis and to design and implement field research
  • Knowledge of international development monitoring and evaluation
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • A history of working without hands-on guidance and direction
  • Willingness to contribute to CTL’s broader mission

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with USAID, food security, and/or market facilitation projects
