Visitors can listen in online to a session of the 2016 Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) meeting, which will talk about different economic aspects of scaling up production of soybean – and agricultural intensification in general – in the tropics on Aug. 2 at 7:45 a.m. Eastern Time.

The session, Soybean Expansion in the Tropics, will explore the topic of the proliferation of soybean in the tropics from four perspectives:

  • Production economics, which will be led by Dr. Peter Goldsmith of the University of Illinois
  • Development economics, which will be led by Dr. Jill Findeis of the University of Missouri
  • Environmental economics led by Dr. Michael Cole, senior scientist at the Woods Hole Research Center, and
  • Agribusiness economics, led by Dr. Peter Richards of USAID’s Bureau of Food Security.

Soybean serves as a case study to allow analysis of the larger issues of intensification of agriculture in the tropics. The session will be moderated by Dr. Robert Bertram, chief scientist of the Bureau of Food Security at USAID.

More than 1,300 participants are expected to attend the 2016 AAEA Annual Meeting, which will take place on July 31-August 2 at the Marriott Copley Place, Boston, Mass.
