Technical experts and farmers’ organisations used a scorecard and certain criteria to identify the best of more than 250 submissions for the list. This collection relays innovation stories, along with promotional material used to inform farmers.

For its part, MFK told about its work to improve Haitian groundnuts, which are an important part of the diet, but may also contain cancer-causing aflatoxin produced by naturally occurring mold.

Through a combination of collaborative research, farmer education and market incentives, MFK was able to purchase 140,636 kg of aflatoxin-free groundnuts from Haitian farmers between 2008 and 2010, supporting economic development in local communities and lowering their overall aflatoxin exposure.

Other innovations that made the top 20 list include improving poultry production with new varieties in Ghana, a steam-powered dryer for cassava in Sierra Leone, organizing coffee growers into co-op networks in Uganda.
