Hanna Young

Some careers begin with a plan. Hanna Young’s began with a passion.

At the University of Georgia, Hanna initially set out as a psychology major with a Spanish minor. But by her junior year, her academic advisor noted she had room to take on another minor. Inspired by a lifelong love of plants and gardening, Hanna chose Horticulture—without knowing it would one day become her calling.

Looking back, one course stands out: Interior Landscaping with Dr. Paul Thomas. His encouragement was pivotal. He suggested Hanna consider switching majors, assuring her that no matter what path she took, she was destined for a career in horticulture. Within six months of landing her first job, Hanna realized he was absolutely right. After several years working at The Biltmore Estate, where she was assigned to the historic Biltmore Conservatory, she moved back to Georgia and worked with Sedgefield Interior Landscapes before landing at Smith-Gilbert Gardens, the City of Kennesaw Botanical Garden.

Today, Hanna is the Garden Manager of Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw, Georgia. In this role, she channels her deep appreciation for nature into a space that educates, inspires, and nurtures not only the public, but the next generation of horticulturists. Even in her short time as Garden Manager, she has made a remarkable impact—revitalizing and reimagining the gardens in ways that make them more engaging and inclusive.

One of Hanna’s proudest achievements has been the redesign of the Pollinator Garden. What began as an ecological feature has blossomed into a Living Laboratory for children and the broader community. The immersive space includes sensory plants that invite touch, smell, and exploration; vegetables that show where food comes from; and even a mud kitchen where children combine soil and creativity. It’s hands-on horticulture, rooted in joy and discovery.

This garden does more than attract bees and butterflies—it cultivates curiosity. It welcomes budding scientists, dreamers, and future environmental stewards. Thanks to Hanna’s vision, kids can experience the natural world with all five senses and discover that gardening is about much more than planting. It’s about growing connection, care, and wonder.

Hanna Young is proof that a minor in Horticulture can lead to major change. Her journey reminds us that when passion is embraced with purpose, it can transform not only a career—but entire ecosystems.
