The Cubans do love their beans and rice, and I can’t blame them. At almost every meal a key component of the meal was congri, which is a delicious dish of rice and beans cooked together. The bean juice adds flavor to the rice and pairs perfectly. No matter where we went on the island a mountain of rice and beans was always a given. In fact, many Cubans don’t consider a meal complete without rice or beans. Most dinners consisted of a protein source(chicken, pork, or fish), fried plantain, congri, and some sort of fruit juice. Wheat is unable to grow in Cuba, making the cost of flour for bread higher than normal, therefore bread consumption was minimal.
