While I highly recommend trying to visit as many places as possible I also recommend falling in love with Cortona. After all it was home for a month. While Cortona may be a small town, the town has endless possibilities. There are many local places that I will never forget especially Snoopy’s gelato. Cortona has so many places to explore from churches, parks, restaurants, shops, and overlooks. A few of my favorite memories from my time on the program were all in Cortona. One night I hiked up to the fortress and watched the sunset alone. I brought pizza, drinks, and music. It was the most relaxing night of the trip for me and also was the most stunning sunset that I have ever seen. I could truly say that I was among the clouds. Many times a group of us would go and get sandwiches or pizza for lunch and sit on the plaza steps and just watch the town interact around us. The professors all had many many recommendations for new restaurants to try in Cortona. The local shops and market on the weekends were filled with many items that you can’t find in other cities. There are still so many places that I felt that I didn’t get to explore in Cortona while on the trip. I wish that I would have taken more time to try different local restaurants during free periods instead of staying back at the Kehoe center. Although the trip can be very tiring, the joy that you will receive from the memories will far outweigh the feeling of not getting enough sleep. You don’t have to plan where to go on your free time in Cortona just go down into the town and let yourself wander into new stores, new streets, and new places. Cortona after all is home to a UGA campus so it has to be the greatest place in Italy.
