Of one of the many locations we will be visiting on this Spring Break Tour is Ellis Brothers Pecans in Vienna, GA. Ellis Brothers began in 1944 when Marvin and Irene Ellis purchased the original 60 acre pecan grove. This grove has now grown and been converted in the retail store and main operation center. Elliot Ellis graduated UGA in 1956 and started working as a county agent. It wasn’t until Ellis was around 43 that he and his family moved back home to help with the grove. In 1978 they had grown the business enough to open the retail store, which was mention earlier, the mail order business to be able to ship orders and gifts, and Irenes Candy kitchen which has many kinds of candies and goodies and you can also find Irene’s famous pecan brittle. Two of their three sons began working full time in the family business after they graduated from college. They have now expanded their business to have over 2,500 acres of pecans and 54 acres of peaches and now have three of their grandchildren working in the business as well. Ellis Brothers pecans have expanded themselves to sell much more than just pecans. They have many different items which include peaches, peanuts, Brazil nuts, Cashews, almonds, macadamia nuts, and walnuts. They also have a very helpful website to be able to place orders for candies, gifts, and other delights. I believe that Ellis Brothers Pecans has been a good example of agritourism and running a secure business. I am very much looking forward to visiting this business.
