{"id":3003,"date":"2026-02-07T09:43:52","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T14:43:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/?p=3003"},"modified":"2026-02-07T10:33:05","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T15:33:05","slug":"lamm-lab-presents-on-communicating-about-animal-and-meat-production-at-nacs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/2026\/02\/lamm-lab-presents-on-communicating-about-animal-and-meat-production-at-nacs\/","title":{"rendered":"Research on Effectively Communicating about Animal and Meat Production Shared at NACS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Multiple research posters and an oral presentations\u00a0were presented by the Lamm Lab on how to most effectively communicate about animal production and meat science at the National Agricultural Communications Symposium, held February 1- 2, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/people\/megan-meyer\/\">Megan Meyer\u00a0<\/a>presented a research poster titled <em>Exploring the Impact of Food Safety Perceptions on Meat Purchasing Intentions<\/em>. Her study explored how public perceptions of food safety influence consumers\u2019 future meat purchasing plans. The findings revealed that, although consumers generally expressed moderate concerns about food safety, these concerns were not the main factor driving their meat purchase decisions, nor were they significantly linked to intentions to buy beef or pork. The results indicated other factors, such as price, health beliefs, and cultural values, may have a greater impact on meat-buying choices. Using Social Cognitive Theory, her first poster titled <em>Exploring Consumers&#8217; Trust in new Food Using Social Cognitive Theory <\/em>investigated how personal, behavioral, and environmental factors shape consumers\u2019 trust in new foods. The results highlighted that acceptance is strongly affected by trust in the information about the food, stressing the importance of clear, transparent, and credible communication regarding meat production practices. Her second poster, <em>Aligning Animal Science Comunication with Consumer Values: Insights from Value-Belief-Norm Theory<\/em>, applied&nbsp;Value-Belief-Norm theory&nbsp;to compare consumer perceptions of animal- and plant-based proteins across health and environmental aspects. Her study explored how consumers perceive meat-related messaging across major social media platforms. The findings showed that users of Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube viewed meat messaging on their platforms as somewhat positive, while Facebook users reported much lower perceptions. The study looked at how different types of background audio used in Instagram-style reels about complex scientific topics, like gene editing, influence audience responses to the message. Specifically, the research examined how pop music, rap music, country music, AI voiceover narration, or silence affected viewers\u2019\u00a0hedonic response,\u00a0recall, and\u00a0elaboration\u00a0of the scientific content in the reel. The findings indicated each audio treatment influenced these outcomes differently, demonstrating that background audio is not a neutral element in science communication. Instead, audio can be\u00a0<strong>s<\/strong>trategically selected based on specific communication goals, whether the aim is to increase enjoyment, support deeper cognitive processing, or improve message recall.\u00a0His presentation was in the distinguished manuscript track and was awarded Outstanding Research Paper overall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"654\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-06-at-12.42.16-AM-1.png\" alt=\"Dennis presenting at NACS 2026\" class=\"wp-image-3040\" style=\"width:431px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-06-at-12.42.16-AM-1.png 654w, https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-06-at-12.42.16-AM-1-300x293.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These presentations demonstrate the Lamm Lab\u2019s commitment to social science and communication research related to animal agriculture. By examining trust, values, message design, and communication channels, the studies provide insights into how to better share science-based information about meat and the science behind animal production.
