You can read the entire article &#8220;When Machines Speak Science: Testing Consumers&#8217; Perceptions of AI-Generated Science Communication Messages&#8221; in the <a href=\"https:\/\/newprairiepress.org\/jac\/vol109\/iss3\/3\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=2810&amp;action=edit#:~:text=newprairiepress.org\/jac\/vol109\/iss3\/3\/\">Journal of Applied Communications<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective science communication\u00a0is essential for addressing societal challenges, shaping policy, and building trust between experts and the public.\u00a0Abilities once considered exclusive to humans, such as intelligence, language processing, knowledge representation, and reasoning to effectively communicate,\u00a0are now exhibited by AI. Therefore, many rely on AI to produce content on virtually any subject. As a result, written language is no longer an exclusively human domain. Despite this potential, many people remain skeptical, as studies show\u00a0some individuals experience mild to moderate aversion\u00a0to the development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this study, the research team used\u00a0Facebook, the most widely used social media platform in the United States, to share posts based on recent scientific journal articles on the topics of pig welfare and pig nutrition.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Respondents in the study were randomly assigned to view one of four posts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Animal nutrition message (AI-generated)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animal nutrition message (scientist-generated)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"848\" height=\"589\" data-id=\"2830\" src=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.52-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.52-PM.png 848w, https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.52-PM-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.52-PM-768x533.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Animal welfare message (AI-generated)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animal welfare message (scientist-generated)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"798\" height=\"658\" data-id=\"2831\" src=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.42-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.42-PM.png 798w, https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.42-PM-300x247.png 300w, https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/lammlab\/files\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-22-at-12.32.42-PM-768x633.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Respondents first read the assigned post, after which they rated its perceived transparency. Then it was disclosed to them how the post had actually been generated (by AI or by a scientist) and asked to rate their perceived transparency again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before disclosure, posts on&nbsp;<em>animal welfare<\/em>&nbsp;were seen as more transparent than those on&nbsp;<em>animal nutrition<\/em>, regardless of whether they were AI- or scientist-generated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After disclosure, transparency ratings shifted depending on the source. Respondents rated&nbsp;<em>AI-generated animal welfare posts<\/em>&nbsp;significantly lower in transparency compared to&nbsp;<em>scientist-generated animal nutrition posts<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overall, once<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>respondents learned the source, transparency\u00a0dropped\u00a0across both topics when posts were identified as AI-generated, but\u00a0increased\u00a0when identified as scientist-generated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The study concluded that when communicating with public audiences about animal science topics, regardless of whether they are contentious, scientists are viewed as more trustworthy for creating social media science messages compared to those generated by AI.&nbsp;This reflects ongoing concerns about AI&#8217;s role in fields where audiences are hesitant to trust AI-produced content. The researchers suggest that using AI in communication could be detrimental to the credibility of research organizations if the public perceives messages as authored by humans and later finds out they were AI-generated.
