The Nursery and Research Technician (Technician) is a full-time position overseeing all aspects of the JCRA nursery operations and coordinating and assisting with JCRA research programs. Other duties include coordinating various plant sales and distributions with JCRA staff. The Technician will work hands-on in the nursery, support horticultural staff as needed, assist with plant records, assist with events and programs, and supervise interns and volunteers.

The JCRA has a legacy of leadership within the realm of ornamental horticulture and continues to expand its impact through new gardens, new plants, and new educational programs. Position Description The Nursery and Research Technician (Technician) is a full-time position overseeing all aspects of the JCRA nursery operations and coordinating and assisting with JCRA research programs. Other duties include coordinating various plant sales and distributions with JCRA staff. The Technician will work hands-on in the nursery, support horticultural staff as needed, assist with plant records, assist with events and programs, and supervise interns and volunteers. The position will report to the JCRA Curator. Anticipated salary range - $39,000 - $43,000 Duties & Responsibilities Nursery ● Propagate plants for the JCRA and its programs ● Maintain clean weed and pest-free greenhouses ● Organize plants for plant distributions ● Pot up, fertilize, and otherwise nurture plants ● Keep accurate records of all plant material ● Assist with plant records as needed Research ● Assist Color Plant Trials Coordinator with production and evaluation of annual and perennial color trials ● Perform propagation trials as directed and assist with updating the JCRA Woody Plant Propagation Guide ● Serve as the primary JCRA caretaker for research collections and evaluations at the JCRA Research Farm at Lake Wheeler Plant Distributions ● Organize and coordinate various plant distributions including but not limited to daily on-site sales, auctions, spring & fall plant sales, Connoisseur Plants, and the Friends of the Arboretum Giveaway ● Maintain accurate records JCRA ● Assist with special events and educational programs ● Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications

Candidate should have excellent organizational skills and demonstrate an attention to detail in all work-related activities. Candidate must interact with the public and represent the JCRA and NCSU in a positive manner. Candidate must have knowledge of greenhouse plant culture, propagation techniques, and nursery management. Candidate must be able to lift, push, pull pots weighing up to 35 pounds be on their feet for extended periods, be able to bend, stoop, squat and otherwise maintain a nursery collection of several thousand taxa. Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or a related field preferred or the equivalent in hands-on experience.
