The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Southeastern Fruit and Tree Nut Research Laboratory, Byron, GA seeks a Research Geneticist (Post-Doctoral, GS-11, salary commensurate with experience)
The work will specifically include, but is not limited to, the identification of SNPs associated with phenotypic traits, including bud break, flower initiation, and nut quality traits. These markers will be used for developing new and improved pecan cultivars via marker-assisted selection. Additional work will include participation in developing and analyzing the pangenome of pecan scab fungus based on Oxford-nanopore long-read sequencing.

Job Duties
The incumbent’s primary responsibility is to conduct research with appropriate genomic tools (handling of genotyping by sequencing data, variant calling, pangenome-based genome-wide association study in the diversity panel of native pecans, bulked segregant analysis, linkage mapping, QTL analysis), collect phenotypic data and identify genetic markers associated with particular traits.
The incumbent will plan, design, and perform appropriate experiments as well as analyze the results of these investigations. The incumbent will be responsible for searching scientific literature for methods and procedures, and select an appropriate approach to answer research goals as determined by the lead horticulturist in the unit. Records of work will be maintained in official laboratory and field notebooks. The incumbent will participate in preparing data for scientific reports and manuscripts. Local and domestic travel will be required for fieldwork and to attend training, scientific meetings, and conferences. The incumbent will be prepared to perform other duties as assigned by the unit leader
