Hort Major Scores Magnolia Gardens as Internship Destination!

LandonBarkerCongratulations are in order for Miss Landon Barker, UGA Horticulture Major and President elect of Tau Chapter Pi Alpha Xi, whom has been accepted into the summer internship program at the Magnolia Gardens just outside Charleston, South Carolina! If you have not ever visited this historic garden, you must! Truly one of the more fascinating and beautiful places to visit in the South. Many thanks to Tom and Mary Ann Johnson for bringing one of our students into their program. Landon will be working along side students from Versailles, France this summer. Can’t wait to see this adventure’s photos! Go Hort Dawgs!

Dr. John Ruter Presents Tea-Oil Research In China

Dr. Ruter and his graduate student Zhitong Li spent the week of Oct. 10-18, 2015 visiting gardens and institutions in China for his ornamental breeding and tea-oil projects. While there Dr. Ruter gave a presentation at the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden on “Ornamental Breeding and Evaluation Programs at the University of Georgia” and two presentations at the Central South University of Forestry and Technology in Hunan Province and the Subtropical Forestry Research Institute in Zhejiang Province entitled “Development of tea-oil camellia as a new crop for the United States”. While there they also spent time visiting with faculty, staff, and growers to get the latest information on tea-oil production in China.

 

Dr. Harry Mills Published 4th Edition!

drmillsDr. Harry Mills, retired professor from our department has just published the 4th edition of his Plant Analysis Handbook.  This is an extremely useful reference that provides the nutritional norms for most horticultural crop foliage.  It is the industry standard in most sub-fields of horticulture.  For more information, please click on the PDF File attached.

Horticulture Alumna Halley Granitz: Taking On New Challenges!

Horticulture Department Alumna, Ms. Halley Granitz, left our hallowed halls and went on to received her Master’s Degree from North Carolina State University.  She was then hired by BASF in technical services. Recently she was offered a move upwards and Halley is now a sales specialist with BASF Professional and Specialty Solutions. She now lives in Birmingham and works with pest control professionals in the state of Alabama. Her duties include working with pest control companies to find effective, innovative solutions to pest control challenges, giving educational talks and seminars, and providing customer support on BASF’s portfolio of professional pest control products

David Kopsell Receives ASHS Outstanding Educator Award

Hort DeDSC_3046smpartment Alumni, Dr. David Kopsell, ’99 (In the coat and Tie) Associate Professor at Illinois State University, received the 2015 Outstanding Undergraduate Educator Award from The American Society for Horticultural Science! David received his MS and Ph.D from the Hort Department at UGA. Seen with him here in the image is his brother Dean, whom also graduated with two advanced degrees from UGA. Congratulations Dr. Kopsell !
