Tyler Simmonds<\/strong>
Research Professional

Previous Research:<\/strong> During Tyler’s M.S., he studied symbiotic microbes associated with parasitoid wasps using sequencing techniques. While completing his M.S., he also worked at the University of Georgia sequencing core. He subsequently worked with the USDA sequencing and assembling insect genomes in support of the Ag100Pest and Beenome100 project.
Current Research:<\/strong> Tyler is using comparative genomic and transcriptomic approaches to study how herbivory evolves. Currently, he’s working to use single cell RNA sequencing to characterize the changes in gene expression patterns across cell types in the gut of herbivorous \u00a0Scaptomyza<\/em> compared to their close relatives, which are detritivores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nathan Mak<\/strong>

Previous Research:<\/strong> Between 2022 and 2025, Nathan’s research at Purdue University examined the impacts of anthropogenic contaminants on aquatic wildlife.
Current Research: <\/strong>Nathan’s research focuses on understanding the genetic changes associated with the evolution of herbivory, using a radiation of Scaptomyza<\/em> flies that comprises species exhibiting variation along the facultative-obligate herbivory axis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
