{"id":1949,"date":"2016-10-30T02:03:08","date_gmt":"2016-10-30T06:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/pmil\/?p=1949"},"modified":"2016-10-30T02:03:08","modified_gmt":"2016-10-30T06:03:08","slug":"iarc-releases-free-book-on-mycotoxin-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.caes.uga.edu\/ftfpeanutlab\/2016\/10\/iarc-releases-free-book-on-mycotoxin-control\/","title":{"rendered":"IARC releases free book on mycotoxin control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An aflatoxin research guide previously sold by the World Health Organization now is available for free as a downloadable PDF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImproving Public Health through Mycotoxin Control\u201d contains a \u201cscientific description of the occurrence and effects of mycotoxins but also goes further by outlining approaches to reduce mycotoxin exposure aimed at improving public health in low-income countries,\u201d according to the International Agency for Research Center (IARC).\u00a0 In the past, the guide only was available by purchasing a printed copy from the WHO, but now, after a five-year effort, researchers throughout the world can access the document through the IARC website.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The book includes a general synopsis of fungi-producing mycotoxins and the physical and chemical characteristics of those that are \u201csignificant in causing disease.\u201d\u00a0Chapters discuss different types of mycotoxins, where they are found, and under which conditions they occur.\u00a0 After narrowing down aflatoxins, fumonisins, ochratoxin A, trichothecenes, zearalenone, and ergot alkaloids as the primary focus, the authors discuss information about structures and the chemical diversity between mycotoxins.<\/p>\n<p>The book further describes proper sampling procedures and the difficulty in collecting a sample that accurately represents the mean-batch concentration.\u00a0The book also communicates the specifics involved with the analysis of mycotoxin levels and states the need for \u201csimple and appropriately validated tools\u201d for use at the rural level.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a discussion of the implications of animals ingesting mycotoxin-contaminated feed that may pass on the toxin to humans.
