It’s time to nominate young scientists for the Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, a $10,000 prize that recognizes exceptional, science-based achievement in international agriculture and food production by an individual under 40. The award, endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation, goes to someone who “has clearly demonstrated intellectual courage, stamina, and determination in the fight to eliminate global hunger and poverty,” according to organizers.
Nominations are sought through June 30 for the sixth-annual award, which will be presented at the World Food Prize events in October.
The winner might work directly in the field or at the production or processing level with farmers, animal herders, fishers or others in rural communities, in any discipline or enterprise across the entire food production, processing, and distribution chain.
Candidates will be evaluated and selected based on the attributes and accomplishments that reflect those demonstrated by Dr. Borlaug during his work in field research and application, which include: persistence, innovation, communication, research/science, extension, education, application, leadership and impact.
