The UGA Entomology Summer Bug Camp has been a popular program since its very first inaugural offering in Summer of 2009. Dr. Marianne Shockley, the camp coordinator and driving force behind its creation and success, has always poured her passion and love for insects and service-learning into the many children who have attended over the years. In a very real sense, she was the heart and soul of Bug Camp, its very embodiment. It is with a deep sense of sadness that I inform you of Dr. Shockley’s recent and sudden passing.
The impact of her death has been widely felt and has affected many aspects of our programs in which Dr. Shockley was deeply involved. She was incredibly talented with unique skills and a winsome personality that greatly enriched those activities with none being so affected as Bug Camp, her very own creation.
In her absence, despite our best efforts, we haven’t been able to find a suitable replacement to carry on with the plans. So, I sincerely regret to have to tell you that Bug Camp for summer of 2019 has been canceled.
Please know that we will use the coming months to work as hard as we can to put everything in place to keep Bug Camp going for seasons to come. We are certain it’s what Dr. Shockley would want for the children and the community. Thank you for your understanding.
